Year 1

Jo Wickens

Hi I'm Mrs Wickens, year 1 class teacher. I joined the SJM team last year and love working here. After 18 years teaching, I feel like I have come home, the staff and the parents are so welcoming and supportive and the children are so enthusiastic to learn. My mantra in the classroom is 'Firm, Fair and Fun' and I believe if I am enjoying my teaching the children are enjoying their learning. In a previous life, I worked as a leisure centre manager at a number of different leisure centres between Cumbria and Brighton. I settled in Eastbourne after my son was born and took the leap of faith to train as a teacher in 2004. These days I enjoying watching sport from the couch as opposed to taking part, although have recently discovered Hot Yoga! In my spare time, I enjoy long walks on the Downs or Friston Forest with my husband and my labradoodle, Walter.

Suzie Bettles

I am so thrilled to be teaching in Year 1 alongside Mrs Wickens. I teach the class on Wednesdays and we do Forest School and RE as well as Maths and English. I joined St John's in 2019 after teaching for 6 years in a larger school in Sussex. I have taught at St John's for 4 years now and really enjoy being a part of such a warm and friendly school. I also have the pleasure of teaching all of the other classes for Forest School too!
